New Leadership Elected for Cal State Fullerton’s Philanthropic Foundation Board of Governors

Cal State Fullerton is pleased to announce that Tam Nguyen, president of Advance Beauty College, will serve as chair of the Philanthropic Foundation Board of Governors and Jon Smith, partner at Ernst & Young, will serve as chair elect.

The board is committed to building and strengthening relations with the community, and encouraging advocacy, investment in and support of Cal State Fullerton.

The board would like to also thank our immediate past chair, Joe Hensley, Orange County Market President for US Bank, for his years of service. Joe’s dedication to furthering our mission has been unwavering and the board is stronger under his leadership.

Tam Nguyen

Tam Nguyen has more than 25 years of experience as a business, community, education and philanthropic leader.

He is a second-generation family business owner of Advance Beauty College with Garden Grove and Laguna Hills campuses graduating about 50,000 beauty professionals during its more than 35-year history.

Tam provides leadership and governance while serving as a bridge to underserved communities. He is a proud member of the Genesis Bank and Genesis for Good Foundation Board of Directors. Additionally, Tam is the past chairman and CEO of the Vietnamese American Chamber of Commerce and current co-chair of the Orange County Diverse Business Leaders along with his Hispanic Chamber and Black Chamber colleagues.

He has taught business management at Cal State Fullerton as a faculty member since 2016. He is highly active in the community serving in leadership roles for numerous public agencies and nonprofits such as the Orange County Transportation Authority, Metrolink, Orange County United Way, Garden Grove Community Foundation and MemorialCare's Orange Coast Medical Center.

He graduated from UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton and studied abroad at American University of the Caribbean. Tam holds both MD and MBA degrees.

In the community, he currently serves on the board of directors for Orange County United Way, Garden Grove Community Foundation, and Project Vietnam Foundation.

Jon C. Smith

As a partner with Ernst & Young in Orange County, Jon Smith serves public and private clients in the real estate industry, including real estate investment trusts, real estate funds, homebuilders, and engineering and construction companies. During his tenure with Ernst & Young, Jon has worked with a wide range of clients, both domestically and internationally. He is a certified public accountant and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

A proud alumnus who is married to a CSUF alumna, Jon graduated from Cal State Fullerton in 2002 with a degree in business administration with a concentration in accounting. He serves on the advisory board of the College of Business and Economics’ School of Accountancy and is actively involved with Titan Athletics and several other areas of CSUF. He has been instrumental in serving as a liaison between Ernst & Young and Cal State Fullerton.
